Public sector digital transformation in Africa is gaining momentum. Governments are building portals for tax, licensing and social services; rolling out digital identity systems; and experimenting with data platforms for planning and monitoring.
The potential benefits are significant: faster service delivery, reduced corruption, better policy decisions and improved citizen experience. However, public trust is fragile. Citizens need assurance that their data is protected, used ethically, and not exposed to misuse.
Successful digital government initiatives combine strong technical foundations with transparent governance. They define clear data-sharing agreements, establish oversight mechanisms, and create channels for feedback and redress.
When citizens see that digital services are reliable, fair and responsive, adoption increases. Over time, digital government can become a cornerstone of more inclusive and accountable institutions across the continent.
